Warm Soda’s Matthew Melton is 32 years old, but you’d be forgiven for thinking he’s a teenager. There’s absolutely nothing sloppy or amateurish about his playing or his songwriting, but his music has a youthful quality to it, a certain playfulness in both subject matter and execution. This is music from an imagined adolescence that exists outside of time, garage-pop to soundtrack skipping class and hanging out at the local diner. “I Wanna Go Fast,” the first single from upcoming third LP Symbolic Dream, stays true to its name, clocking in at just over two minutes. Power-pop guitars sparkle and crunch in all the right places, and as the song drives on, the repeated phrase “I wanna go fast” becomes more of a mantra than a lyric — simultaneously triumphant and wistful, full of all the invincibility of youth but with an added awareness of just how brief and fleeting it is. Indulge your nostalgia and listen below.
Symbolic Dream is out 5/4 on Castle Face.
