Sun Kil Moon announced Benji follow-up Universal Themes last month, and although the album contains the previously released “The Possum” and “Cry Me A River Williamsburg Sleeve Tattoo Blues,” we haven’t heard any actual new music until now. “Ali/Spinks 2″ continues Mark Kozelek’s recent stream-of-consciousness approach, but his lyrics are set in electric rock music that reminds me of “Salvador Sanchez” gone full Pavement. There are references to Kozelek’s father, True Detective DVDs, pet adoption, dreams about 1978 boxing matches, and Rob Zombie movies. It’s good. Listen.
Universal Themes is out 6/2 on Caldo Verde.
