Jaakko Eino Kalevi – “Double Talk” (First Listen)

Jaakko Eino Kalevi used to be a tram driver in Helsinki, which might be why his songs sound so well-suited to long, rambling trips. “Double Talk,” the lead single off his forthcoming self-titled album, is a hands-out-the-car-window kind of song. You want to move ever so slightly as his quietly soothing voice washes over you, describing a kind of partnership that borders on telepathy. The Finnish musician now lives and works in Berlin, but mixed Jaakko Eino Kalevi with Nicolas Vernhes in New York. Vernhes is the man at least partially responsible for the elusive, dreamy sound of bands like the War On Drugs, Dirty Projectors, or Lia Ices, and his fingerprints can be seen here, too. Kalevi’s breakthrough 2013 EP was called Dreamzone, but that’s probably a fitting description for all his music. “Double Talk” in particular occupies a heavy-eyed place between waking and sleeping, mesmerizing in its dualities and shoegaze textures. Listen to the song below and check out the tracklist for his full album, out in June.
