HSY – “Goin’ Out West” (Tom Waits Cover) (First Listen)

Canadian hardcore band HSY smacked us with the A-Side to their 7″ “Sally” last month, teasing a Tom Waits cover as the B-Side. Today, the band reveal a reworking of Waits’ “Goin’ Out West” in conjunction with the single’s release. It’s hard to harness Waits’ gravelly tone, but lead singer Jude’s distorted, guttural howls are a fitting parallel. Jude’s vocals are buried in the mix under a punishing, unrelenting barrage of guitars and thrashing drums. Jude had this to say regarding “Goin’ Out West”: “Whenever I hear [the Waits version], I feel compelled to smoke cigarettes and drink a bunch of whiskey — so playing it naturally has the same effect.” Prepare your ears for a beating and listen.
