Mayer Rakim aka A$AP Rocky began rapping at the age of 8. When he was only 12 years old, his father went to jail for selling drugs. A year later his elder brother got killed near his apartment which made him want to take rap seriously.He grew up admiring Harlem rap groups such as The Diplomats, but ASAP Rocky also has a long list of influences like Three 6 Mafia, Mobb Deep, Wu -Tang Clan, UGK, Run DMC and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony. After living in a shelter with his mother around Manhattan, Rocky settled in Elmwood Park, New Jersey
In August 2011. Peso, one of his first singles blew up on the net and within a few weeks, the song became a huge radio hit especially on Hot 97. The video clips of Peso and Purple Swag generated a huge buzz which resulted in ASAP Rocky signing a $3 million recording contract with Sony, RCA Records, and Polo Grounds Music.
It wasn’t long before Rocly released his debut album Long.Live.A$AP, which reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts in 2013, helping him earn an estimated $5 million that year.
But that’s not all, Rocky has a great fashion sense as well which translated into modeling for DKNY and creating a capsule collection for Guess and added to his income. Rocky even does everything from designing album artwork to managing stylists.
In 2015, he released his second studio album At. Long. Last. A$AP which received pretty good reviews. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling 116,000 copies in the United States in the first week. It also gave Rocky his second consecutive number one album on the charts to date.
In February 2016, Guess and Rocky released a collaboration collection called GUE$$, which was inspired by Rocky’s admiration for the brand’s vintage 90s clothing that he wore while growing up.
